I've witnessed countless instances of trail etiquette violations across various off-road groups, from 4x4 enthusiasts to dirt bikers and ATV riders. But let's be clear, this isn't just about motorized users. Campers, hikers, and other non-motorized adventurers can also be guilty of disrespecting the great outdoors.
The problem is twofold. First, poor trail etiquette reflects badly on the entire community, especially in the age of social media. One viral video of reckless behavior can fuel the fire for those seeking to restrict our access to public lands. Second, and more importantly, it's about preserving the very essence of the outdoor experience for future generations.
This is where initiatives like Tread Lightly! and Can-Am's collaboration shine. By offering free rider/driver classes, they're not only educating off-roaders on responsible practices but also incentivizing participation with a brilliant donation scheme. For every rider who completes the masterclass series, Can-Am will donate $35 to OHV trail projects, ensuring the preservation and responsible use of these precious outdoor spaces.
What makes this initiative particularly compelling is its dual benefit. Participants gain valuable knowledge on trail etiquette, safety, and environmental stewardship, while also contributing to the conservation of OHV trails. It's a win-win scenario that encourages a sense of community responsibility.
The class covers essential topics, from rider safety and trail use to environmental awareness and, most importantly, how to avoid being that 10% who give the entire group a bad name. It's a comprehensive approach that addresses the root causes of irresponsible behavior.
However, there's a catch. The donation is limited to the first 2,000 attendees, which I believe is a missed opportunity. Given the current climate and the ongoing threats to public lands, companies like Can-Am should be encouraged to extend their support. After all, their consumers rely on these lands for their adventures, and it's in their best interest to ensure these spaces remain accessible and well-maintained.
Can-Am's Global Marketing Director, Jérémi Doyon-Roch, hit the nail on the head when he emphasized the industry's responsibility to promote responsible riding.
